The Sphinx

There are more than 1,700 Sphinxs in Egypt but the one in Giza -at the Pyramids area- is the most famous...

The ancient Egyptians build the Pyramid Sphinx with the body of a lion to show strength and the head of a male Pharoe to show inteligence.

Thier aim was to frighten away any thief trying to steel their objects and treasures...

The Giza Sphinx was supose to represent the god 'Hor-Em-Khu' or Horus, and is belived to atendate the IV dynasty, which began about 2700 BC. The statue is 72 meters long and 20 meters high. The paws on which were found many paintings, date from the Greco-Roman period. Dates from the new kingdom (The Egyptian empire) and is the same as the sphinx of Giza, though on a smaller scale. This sphinx is only 8 meters high and weighs 80 tons.

Some Sphinxs in Thebes are made up of the body of a Ram, these Sphinxs are named Crio-sphinxs, or of a falcon, and these are named Hieraco-sphinx.

This idea was introduced then to Persia, Greece and at last the Roman provinces from Egypt and Ethiopia ... But the shape of a sphinx became somewhat modified in Greek mythology and art.

We have heard of the Sphinx repairs that started in 1992 and ended in 1998, these repairs are the 15th in the history of the Sphinx.

The 1st was in year 1900 BC by the middle Pharonic kingdom, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th were in the Greek ages. The 6th, 7th and 8th were in the Roman ages!! The French repaired the Sphinx once during the 4 years of their invasions to Egypt!! the British repaired it 4  times, and the republican presidents repaired it twice!!

Reparing the Sphinx this time was a great step, and I attended the end-of repair party at the Pyramids and Sphinx which were really impressive, done by laser beams and cool SOUND & LIGHT effects!!!
