The Pyramids

The pyramids were built a long time ago -1200 BC-. For further information contact Egypt's local server http://egypt.com or the site http://www.sis.gov.eg where all the information needed could be found.

The pyramids are buildings constructed according to basic geometrical principles. Pyramid-shaped buildings have been constructed in many places, but the most celebrated are the ones here in Egypt the land of the ancient civilizations. These Pyramids were built about 2700 and 1900 BC as tombs for the Pharoes. The biggest is the Great Pyramid of 'Khoufou' (Cheops) which covers an area of 52,500 sq m which is equal to 13 acres... and is 146 m high (481 ft) These Pyramids are constructed of 2.5 ,million stones. Each stone weighs more than 3 tones. The workers brought these stones from Thebes (Luxor & Aswan) by roling them through the nile valley !!!

One of the seven wonders of the ancient and modern world and certainly the best known of the three pyramids at Giza, Cheops son of 'Senefrou' (Senetro) *4 dynasity* initialed the building of th tomb which covers 12 acres at the base, and took 30 years to be complete. It's original height was 146 meters, but it's ages of man and weather have shortened it a little. The smalest of the 2.5 million stones weighs 1 ton and the largest could reach 3 tones. The pyramids entrance is on the north face, 16 meters above Giza ground, but it is not used. The other opening leads to an ascending corridor, takes one to the quens hall and then on to the kings hall, which is of gilden granite free of any pictorial art. The sarcophogus remains in place. Above the royal chambers are five small rooms while three small pyramids outside mark the graves of Cheops's wives. Lately an Egyptologist discovered a small hole on top of the King's chamber where the sunlight enters on his birthday, and the same on top of the queens chamber... Son of Cheops, his pyramid is shorter than his father's, (136 meters) and lies to the south of the great pyamids. this pyramid took only 25 years to finish. In design, the pyramid is identical to the older one of Cheops. The pyramid has two entrances on the north side. Khefren's pyramid still has it's acompaniment of outlying buildings; The funeral temple, The Valley temple and The causeway. The smalest of the three, only 62 metres high, but it still retains some of the granite facade on it's lower levels. Menkara's pyramid is southwest of Khefren's tomb. Known as the step pyramids because of it's graded steps. It is regarded as the first stone pyramid. It was built by 'Imhoutoub' (Amenhotep) -ancient Egypt's most famous engeneer and doctor- for king Zoser founder of the 3rd dynasity. The pyramid is about 59 meters high. To the east is a memorial to king Zoser's 30th aniversary. Located 200 meters from Zoser's step pyramid, was built for the last king of the 5th dynasity. The oldest religious paintingsinn the world hang on the walls, portraying the destination of the soul in the aftelife. The ceiling of the tomb chamber, is decorated as a sky full of stars.

The age of the pyramids is the 3rd and 4th dynasity, although other pyramids were built later. All the pyramids were built on the western bank of the Nile because the ancient Egyptians noticed the sunset in the west and because they worshiped the sun, they built their tombs in the west due to their though that the west was the entrance to the world afterlife...
